"My story is your story... Add your own details, and stir well." -- excerpt from Becoming Mother: Confessions from the Mini-Van
MBW Founder Suzie Celentano's creative practice includes the following projects:
WRITING Tarmac, Suzie's play by, for and about military families, was staged as a 'Work in Progress' by the Metropolitan Performing Arts Theatre in Lorton, Virginia at Convergence Theatre in Arlington, VA, May 8 - 9 2009. Plans are in the works for future performances! Suzie is also working on a book of poetry and art for yoga -- with her daughter Sophia. Check back in September 2009 for details!
Suzie's work has been seen on the pages of the Washington Post (2007, Life as Haiku column), and on the stages of Phoenix Theatre DC and Allegheny College (both in 2004.) Her current works include two one-woman shows: Becoming Mother: Confessions from the Mini-Van and Tarmac, a retrospective of the year of her husband's deployment to Southwest Asia in 2007. In 1998, she co-authored Theatre Management: A Successful Guide to Producing Plays on Commercial and Nonprofit Stages with Kevin Marshall. This text continues to be used in theatre programs worldwide.
CHOREOGRAPHY Suzie enjoys custom-designing movement patterns for a variety of experienced, and inexperienced movers...all in the interest of telling a good story! Suzie began choreographing when she was a little girl, and used to "see movement in her head" when she would listen to a song. (Years and many classes later, she still choreographs in exactly the same way.) Her work has been seen in community, collegiate, regional and educational settings. Since 2005, she has dedicated her work to the next generation, serving as a Guest Artist in Choreography at South County Secondary School, where she enjoys mentoring students in grades 7 - 12. There, she has choreographed 7 productions for middle and high school students -- including Thoroughly Modern Millie (2007,) winner of the Cappie Award for Best Musical (a VA/MD/DC competition of 60+ participating high schools) Kiss Me Kate (2008) and Fiddler on the Roof (2009.) Look for Anything Goes at South County Secondary in 2010!
DANCE / ACTING For the past 20 years, Suzie has worked as a professional actor in regional theatre, film and television. Favorite television and film projects include A Will of Their Own, Third Watch (NBC), The District (CBS), Big Brass Ring (Showtime) and April is My Religion (independent directed by Bill Boll, winner of Best of Best in the St. Louis International Film Festival.) From 2003 - 2008, she was a company member (and later, soloist) with the Kathy Harty Gray Dance Theatre, a professional modern dance company based in Alexandria, Virginia. The group is dedicated to keeping Classical Modern Dance alive. and has performed at a variety of venues throughout the East Coast, including the Pentagon Memorial Theatre, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, and the Kennedy Center for the Arts.
